RAW + REAL
I was working with an artist on tour. She is seasoned and has toured for years and years. She was at the end of the tour, only a couple shows to go, so tired and said, "I want to quit. I hate this!”
My response - I want you to start tonight's concert expressing how tired you are and how you don't want to be here. Of course, they replied with "I can't do that!" That’s not the impact they want to have on their audience. I asked her to trust me and simply start the concert expressing the genuine feelings she was having at that moment and see where it takes her.
After the show, I asked how it went. She said “It was the best! It was so fun! The audience was fantastic!” and she had a great time!
How did this happen? Why did my instructions work?
What happened was she was honest when she started the show, so those emotions of exhaustion and frustration were allowed to be expressed and pass through her. The songs that she was singing were then able to affect her in the moment and she and the audience connected and had a good time. Being REAL is essential. Being emotionally honest + vulnerable is where connection and belonging happens.
If she had tried to ignore her fatigue, pretend to be happy, or try to put on a good face for the audience, she would've been more tired, more fatigued, wouldn't have sung as well, (the voice can’t lie) and she wouldn't have had fun because she would've been fighting her own experience, her own state of being.
Emotions pass in 90 seconds!
Try this next time you sing, are in the studio, writing - just BEING.
Allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling - express it emotionally and allow the moment to have an affect on you. You won’t stay nervous for long - IF you express it!
